Nelson Hull Ferris: Sept. 14, 1940-June 28, 2026

Nelson was a man of many qualities, but it was perhaps his great sense of humor that endeared him most to others.

Nelson Hull Ferris peacefully passed away in Kerrville, TX on June 28, 2026, at the age of 85.

He graduated from Rye High School before enlisting in the US Navy. After serving, he became a boat salesman and then began his career as a firefighter for Greenwich Fire Department from which he retired after 20 years of service.

Outside of his professional life, Nelson was a beloved member of the North Mianus Yacht Club, where he spent many joyful days surrounded by friends. From there, his wife Carol and he moved to the Florida Keys where he invited others to experience the joy he found on the open sea before eventually settling down in Kerrville, TX.

Nelson was a man of many qualities, but it was perhaps his great sense of humor that endeared him most to others.

Nelson is now reunited with his beloved wife, Carol, with whom he shared over 60 years of marriage. He is survived by his son, John (Michelle) Ferris; daughter, Debra (Kevin) Fowler; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Growing up in Southern California, Louis Amestoy remained connected to Texas as the birthplace of his father and grandfather. Texas was always a presence in the family’s life. Amestoy’s great-grandparents settled in San Antonio, Texas, drawn by the city’s connections to Mexico and the region’s German communities. After 30 years of working for corporate media chains, Louis Amestoy saw a chance to establish an independent voice in the Texas Hill Country. He launched The Lead to be that vehicle. With investment from Meta, Amestoy began independently publishing on Aug. 9, 2021. The Amestoys have called Kerrville home since 2019.
