In the fourth quarter, five Tivy players scored to help blow the game wide open. Four Tivy players — Johnston, Vega, Carlisle and Frausto — all scored in double figures.

Tivy dominates second half in victory over Stevens, 2-0

The Tivy High School girls’ soccer team scored goals in both halves on Friday night to stop visiting San Antonio Stevens 2-0 in a match at Antler Stadium.

Ashley Cale scored in the first half to help the Antlers secure a 1-0 halftime lead. In the second half, Tivy’s put constant pressure on Stevens forcing at least four shots on goal until Stella Hendricks broke through for a goal in about the 60th minute.

Schreiner men win a nail-biter in the overtime, with unexpected heroics

Before Friday night, Schreiner University junior guard Christian Caldwell had scored just two points this season, logging less than 20 minutes in 15 games.

That changed on Friday when Caldwell played 25 minutes, scored five points in overtime, and helped lead the Mountaineers to a 65-62 win over host Southwestern University. Caldwell finished with 14 points — a career-high. Before Friday, Caldwell averaged less than one point per game.

More importantly, the Mountaineers are back in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference race with three consecutive victories. The Mountaineers play at Texas Lutheran on Saturday.

Beau Cervantes scored 14 points, while teammate Kamden Ross scored 12. The strangest stat line of the night was guard Alex Dehoyos pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds, including five in overtime. The rebounds kept the Mountaineers in possession of the ball during critical overtime seconds.

The victory improved the Mountaineers to 9-7 and 3-4 in the SCAC.

Miles scores 29 to lead Schreiner women
Demauria Miles knocked down five 3-pointers en route to 29 points to lead Schreiner University’s women’s basketball team to a 77-49 drubbing of host Southwestern University on Friday night.

The Mountaineers got a 22-point effort from Josline Hernandez, who hit three 3-pointers.

The victory was important for the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference standings. Both teams were tied at 4-2 coming into the game. The win moved Schreiner into third place in the conference at 5-2, and 9-7 overall.
