Carter Blackburn comes home tonight to play new music at Pint and Plow

Blackburn, who grew up in Kerrville and began his broadcasting career at KERV radio, considers music a “hobby” and “fun side project” alongside his national sports broadcasting duties.

CBS Sports announcer Carter Blackburn will perform tonight at 6 p.m. at Pint and Plow Brewing Co., bringing his musical talents back to his hometown.

Blackburn, who grew up in Kerrville and began his broadcasting career at KERV radio, considers music a “hobby” and “fun side project” alongside his national sports broadcasting duties. The son of former Kerrville Mayor Bill Blackburn, he treats his local performances as a “celebration of Kerrville music.” Blackburn will play with Bill Mahko, a familiar face and voice in Kerr County music.

“I learn five or six chords, write lyrics, figure out how to put them into some chords,” Blackburn said during an interview today, describing his songwriting approach.

The performer is releasing a new song titled “Dead Man’s Clothes” on Spotify today and said he’s emerging from a songwriting “dry spell” that lasted “a couple years.” He finds it “invigorating” that “tunes or lyrics started reappearing in my head.”

Blackburn emphasized Kerrville’s “rich musical tradition,” citing artists such as Jimmie Rodgers, 13th Floor Elevators and Robert Earl Keen. He has previously performed songs about Kerrville and the local folk festival at Pint and Plow.

The broadcaster also participated in a pandemic-era backyard benefit concert for a local child who died in a car crash, an event organized by Russell Nimky in “less than 48 hours” that showcased the community’s generosity.

Before tonight’s performance, Blackburn plans to take his children to Natural Bridge Caverns. His broadcasting career began in high school at KERV-AM, where he called high school football games.

Blackburn currently works as a play-by-play announcer for CBS Sports, covering college basketball, college football and NFL games.

The show begins at 6 p.m. at Pint and Plow Brewing Co., located at 332 Clay St.
