Schreiner continues its developmental football dominance with shutout road win

“Our defense did an outstanding job of dominating the game,” Schreiner head coach Keith Allen said. “We were able to get five takeaways, a defensive touchdown and a safety—all while shutting them out.”

Schreiner University’s defense delivered a dominant performance Saturday night, pitching a shutout and scoring a touchdown in a 30-0 victory over Texas Community Christian College at Gupton Stadium.

The Mountaineers improved to 5-0 in their inaugural football season, overcoming offensive struggles with a defensive unit that forced five turnovers and recorded a safety.

“Our defense did an outstanding job of dominating the game,” Schreiner head coach Keith Allen said. “We were able to get five takeaways, a defensive touchdown and a safety—all while shutting them out.”

Defensive back John Medaris provided the highlight of the night with a 90-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the second quarter. The play gave Schreiner a 14-0 lead and sparked a 16-point quarter that put the game away.

Quarterback Isaac Ponce accounted for two rushing touchdowns, including a seven-yard score in the first quarter that opened the scoring. He added a 15-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and finished with 54 yards on five carries while completing nine of 20 passes for 81 yards.

Caleb Sosa recorded a safety late in the second quarter to push the lead to 23-0, and Aidan Varwig capped the scoring with a one-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Bryce Warren converted all four extra-point attempts.

Schreiner outgained Texas Community Christian 302-138 in total yards and held a commanding 221-88 advantage on the ground. The Mountaineers converted four of 11 third-down attempts while limiting the Spartans to three of 15.

Defensive lineman Elegant Thompson recorded three sacks and three tackles for loss, while Nathan Lyon led the team with six tackles.

“Winning a game 30-0 is always a great team accomplishment,” Allen said. “5-0 in an inaugural year where everyone thought we wouldn’t win a game feels great, but the job is not done.”

The Mountaineers will travel to Abilene to face Hardin-Simmons University on Nov. 10 at 6 p.m.Retry
