Dewell Ferguson’s filing means a race for Kerrville City Council

3 candidates have now filed to run for the Kerrville City Council.

The race is on for Place 2 on the Kerrville City Council when Barbara Dewell Ferguson was certified as a candidate on Friday to succeed Kim Clarkson, who is not seeking re-election.

Dewell Ferguson and Jeff Harris are the only candidates to file in Place 2. In Place 1, Layng Guerriero is the only official candidate for the seat held by Roman Garcia, who announced he’s running for re-election but has yet to file formally.

In recent months, Dewell Ferguson has been a leading voice urging the City Council to reconsider its policies about the library collection. On Tuesday night, Dewell Ferguson, once again, made it clear that the City Council needs to consider community input on library materials in the wake of a ”banned books” event that featured several LGBTQ+ titles.

In 2021, Dewell Ferguson served on the committee that assessed the needs of the public safety building, which voters approved spending $45 million to pay for the project last May. However, Dewell Ferguson ended up coming out against it during a Feb. 8, 2022, City Council meeting, where she described the project as one full of wish lists.

The municipal election is May 6. Candidates have until Feb. 17 to file their paperwork.
