Nonprofit Week 2025: Bird City Kerrville
Bird City Kerrville focuses on watershed rebuilding and restoring habitat along the river and creeks.
Katy Kappell from Bird City Kerrville discussed the organization’s commitment to bird conservation and habitat protection following the flood’s impact on local wildlife.
The timing of the flood was fortunate as birds were not nesting, but wildlife was disoriented and confused by the altered landscape. The Riverside Nature Center garden is “going berserk” due to river mud, and sunflowers are thriving at Flat Rock Park.
Bird City Kerrville focuses on watershed rebuilding and restoring habitat along the river and creeks. Their immediate projects include building a fence around the bird blind’s viewing area, requiring 100 feet of 5-foot wire, 30 poles, cedar staves and a small gate.
The organization also plans to install a solar-powered water feature needing a small stock tank and solar pump. Volunteers are needed to help with these projects, and donations are welcome with arrangements for pickup.
Bird City Kerrville achieved Texas certification in 2025, recognizing the community’s commitment to creating bird-friendly environments and supporting migratory species in the Texas Hill Country.
