The Lead Live Podcast: April 17, 2025 episode

The Lead Live, hosted by Louis Amestoy and Leslie Jones, aired Thursday from the Peterson Health Digital Studio at Pint and Plow Brewing Co. in Kerrville, Texas.

Legislative developments took center stage. Amestoy reported the Texas Legislature approved a school voucher bill at 2 a.m. The bill passed along party lines, with two Republicans voting against it. The bill creates a funding priority system, placing children with disabilities from low-income households at the top, followed by other income levels. Existing private school students gain automatic eligibility. Amestoy also noted the passage of HB2, which increases public school funding by a $200 basic allotment per student.

Amestoy also discussed a leaked document regarding potential changes to the Health and Human Services Department. He expressed concern that proposed cuts could impact local organizations and programs like Head Start.

The hosts addressed listener criticism. An email accused Amestoy of creating fear and lacking balance in his reporting. Amestoy and Jones defended their approach, emphasizing their perspective.

The show also covered lighter topics. Amestoy recommended the TV show “Adolescence.” The hosts discussed music, including Benson Boone’s cover of “Bohemian Rhapsody” and 80s music. Amestoy jokingly suggested a new role for the City Secretary at council meetings, involving walk-up music for council members.

Guest Shelley McElhannon, Kerrville City Secretary, provided updates on city events. She noted the upcoming KISD election, the 75th anniversary of Louise Hayes Park on April 26, and a community cookout at the Doyle Center on April 24.

Jones highlighted local events, including exhibits, trivia nights, an Easter bike tour, a carnival, and live music.

The hosts briefly discussed New York Times headlines and market trends, noting a downward trend and President Trump’s criticism of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. A story about a United Airlines plane reportedly sucking a rabbit into its engine concluded the show.
