No. 9 Mary Hardin-Baylor overpower Schreiner in home opener

Visiting Crusaders sweep their way past Schreiner on Tuesday night.

The big-hitting University of Mary-Hardin Baylor powered its way past host Schreiner University on Tuesday night in a non-conference volleyball matchup, 3-0.

UMHB swept past the Mountaineers 25-15, 25-15 and 25-20. It was the first home match for Schreiner and the first one with fans since the 2019 season.

There was plenty of enthusiasm in the student sections going into the match. UMHB was undefeated coming in, ranked No. 9 in the NCAA Division III, and featured a big-hitting lineup.

The Crusaders were efficient by hitting .218 on the night, and the defense held Schreiner to a .069 hitting effort. Schreiner did show fight in every set.

Brooke Byer and Kayla Lofland had seven kills each, but the Mountaineers struggled with control. Schreiner had 24 hitting errors on the night, while UMHB had 11. Those aren't easy to overcome against a team like UHMB, which had a significant size advantage.

Emily Reinhard had 16 setting assists and Mia Moreno added 11. Elora Reyes had 16 digs.

Schreiner is now 1-5 on the season and returns to action Friday for a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference match at Colorado College, the No. 4-ranked team in the country.
