Doyle Community Center packs June with events, from bingo to Blues Fest

The Doyle Community Center has a full slate of June programming, ranging from a young professionals mixer and senior bingo to a free energy-saving fair and the return of its annual Blues Fest.

The center’s Community Bible Study meets on alternating Thursdays — June 11 and June 25 — from 4 to 5 p.m. The sessions are open to newcomers and longtime participants alike, and attendees are asked to bring their own Bible.

Friday, June 12, is the busiest day on the calendar, with three events. From 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., KPUB and the Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG) will host a free Weatherization and Energy-Saving Event, offering information on programs that can lower energy bills, including free weatherization for income-qualifying households. The morning includes a free lunch, bingo, live music, giveaways and a drawing for a smart thermostat package. Residents who want to apply for assistance should bring a recent utility bill, proof of income and identification for all household members.

Overlapping with that event, the center’s Senior Lunch and Bingo runs from noon to 2 p.m., with lunch sponsored by KPUB and music by Ray Gutierrez. Organizers stress the meal is open to all ages, not just seniors. The day wraps up with Game Night from 7 to 11 p.m., featuring bingo, cards and dominoes; guests are welcome to bring their own snacks and drinks.

The month’s marquee event is the fifth annual Pleasure Garden Blues Fest on Saturday, June 20, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Doyle Pavilion. This year’s theme is “The Blues Meets the British Invasion.” The free event will feature live blues, food, beverages, vendors, children’s activities and a silent auction. Attendees should bring their own chairs.

The center is also offering no-cost dental care for adults 60 and older through a partnership with AACOG and Enable Dental, with services including exams, X-rays, cleanings, fillings and extractions. Appointments are limited; to reserve a spot, call 830-257-4446.
