Flood-warning forums anchor the week, with ‘Frozen’ close behind

“Frozen Jr.” takes the Cailloux stage for three performances, opening Friday at 7:30 p.m., with a second evening show Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and a Sunday matinee at 2:30 p.m.

The week ahead in Kerr County balances the weighty and the joyful, with three community forums on the Guadalupe River flood warning system sharing the calendar with the local debut of “Frozen Jr.” at the Cailloux Theater.

Front and center are the Community Conversations sessions hosted by the Upper Guadalupe River Authority, which is gathering public input as the county and its partners work to strengthen flood warning along the Guadalupe. UGRA has scheduled three meetings across three communities, and the choice of locations tracks the river itself — Ingram, Hunt and Kerrville all sit along the water that rose so catastrophically last summer.

The first session is Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Ingram High School cafeteria. Two more follow Thursday: one at 10 a.m. at the Hunt Community Center and another at 5:30 p.m. at the UGRA Lecture Hall. The spread of times and places is plainly meant to give as many residents as possible a chance to weigh in, and anyone with a stake in how the county warns its neighbors of high water — which is to say everyone here — has reason to show up.

After that, the week lightens considerably.

“Frozen Jr.” takes the Cailloux stage for three performances, opening Friday at 7:30 p.m., with a second evening show Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and a Sunday matinee at 2:30 p.m. The Disney adaptation is a reliable crowd-pleaser and a summer family outing built around Elsa, Anna, and a song everyone in the car already knows by heart is about as safe a bet as the season offers.

There is no shortage of music to fill the days in between. The marquee free show is Concerts by the River, with the Corey Weaver Band playing Louise Hays Park on Saturday at 7 p.m. — bring a chair, a blanket and a willingness to stay until dark. The singer-songwriter circuit runs strong all weekend, from Keith Robertson and Trick Meyers at Pint & Plow to Brad Blackburn and Collie Miller at Singing Water Vineyards, and Matthew James Butler turns up twice, mingling Monday at Turtle Creek Vineyard and playing again there Friday afternoon.

For something with a little more grit, CJ Chenier brings zydeco to the Lazy Days Canteen at Roddy Tree on Friday, and Marty Haggard plays the same room Saturday evening. And no Hill Country summer week is complete without Crider’s: the rodeo and dance returns Saturday with the cafe opening at 6:30 p.m., the rodeo at 8 and Nick Lawrence taking the dance floor at 9.

Saturday morning belongs to the markets. The Hill Country Heritage Farmers Market on Junction Highway and the Heart of the Hills Farmers Market on Water Street both run 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., while The Ridge hosts the “Tropic Like It’s Hot” plant show. Out in Center Point, the Summer Evening Market at Arreola Ranch closes the day at 6 p.m. with vendors, Loteria and an outdoor movie.

Families have plenty to work with beyond the theater. Riverside Nature Center’s Nature Nights summer series continues Tuesday at 6 p.m., and the center keeps a full slate midweek with Wildflower Bunch, a hummingbird NEd Talk and Saturday’s Riverside Rangers for junior naturalists. The Museum of Western Art opens its doors for a Family Free Day on Saturday with a scavenger hunt, crafts and story time, and the Butt-Holdsworth Memorial Library rolls through its usual deep bench of summer programming, from Lego clubs to a Friends of the Library book sale.

A few events lean delightfully off the beaten path. The Arcadia Live hosts an Edgar Allan Poe Speakeasy on Saturday with four seatings — 2, 4, 6 and 8 p.m. — for those whose tastes run a touch macabre. Readers, meanwhile, have their pick of book clubs: Dan Beaver’s group tackles Tom Robbins’ “Even Cowgirls Get the Blues” on Wednesday at Central Provisions, the Talking Texas Book Club takes up Hallie Crawford Stillwell’s “I’ll Gather My Geese” on Thursday, and Saturday brings both Cupid’s Round Table and a creative writing session with Kathleen Hudson at the library.

And for those willing to drive, Fredericksburg’s Summer Music Institute stages faculty and chamber concerts nearly every night this week, most of them free with a reservation.

It is, in short, another stupendous week — serious where it needs to be, and generous with everything else. The full slate of events, with times, locations and links, is in this week’s events preview.
