Doyle Blues Fest anchors a busy Juneteenth and Father’s Day weekend

It’s a week with something for nearly everyone — a freedom story, an evening of honors, a Father’s Day breakfast, and a whole lot of music in between. The full calendar follows below.

When the Doyle Community Center pavilion fills with music Saturday afternoon, it will do what this corner of Kerrville has always done well — gather. The 5th Annual Blues Fest runs from 4 to 8 p.m., a free afternoon of food, vendors, a silent auction and a lineup of music, set in the neighborhood that has long been a center of Black life in Kerrville. It lands squarely in Juneteenth weekend, and that timing gives the gathering a little extra weight.

Juneteenth — June 19 — marks the day in 1865 when word of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Texas. This year the date falls on Friday, and the celebrations stretch across the weekend. The Heart of the Hills Heritage Center opens its own Juneteenth celebration Friday from 5 to 7 p.m., with live music from Ghosts of the Pleasure Garden, free admission to the exhibits, and wine and barbecue. Those wanting a bit of history first can tune in Thursday at 6 p.m. for “Juneteenth – A Texas Freedom Story,” a free online webinar from the Texas Historical Commission’s friends group.

Women of Distinction at Tucker Hall

Friday also brings an evening we’ve been building toward for months. The Kerr County Lead will host its inaugural Women of Distinction event at Tucker Hall at 6 p.m., honoring 25 women and three community groups whose work runs across law enforcement, nonprofit leadership, public service, business, education and flood recovery. The honorees were chosen from more than 70 nominees. It is, in full disclosure, our own event — and one we hope you’ll join us for. Tickets and details are at kerrcountylead.com.

A Father’s Day full of small gifts

Sunday rounds out the long weekend with a string of Father’s Day offerings, several of them free. Kerrville-Schreiner Park is waiving its entry fee for the day, and Scott Schreiner Golf Course is handing out a free driving-range token. Gravity Check Saloon puts out a taco buffet at noon, while the Cafe at the Ridge hosts a dog-friendly Bark & Brunch at 9 a.m. and Lazy Days Canteen at Roddy Tree serves up a Junior Pruneda Jam Brunch from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with live music to match. Justin Upshaw, Bob Stewart, Chris Lirette and Susan Herndon carry the day’s tunes, and Central Provisions closes the weekend with its monthly neighborhood potluck at 6 p.m. — bring a dish.

Service, civics and the flood still close by

The week’s quieter offerings carry some of its heaviest meaning. On Wednesday, a local veterans group will host a free PTSD workshop at the City of Kerrville Public Safety Facility at 4 p.m., aimed at the first responders, public safety workers, emergency management staff and volunteers who served during and after the July 4 flood. Seating is limited, and a spot can be reserved by emailing wendling.j@gmail.com.

Wednesday evening also turns civic, with a town hall on the Elm Creek Pipeline Project at The Arcadia Live at 6 p.m. — worth a look for anyone tracking where the area’s water and infrastructure debates are headed.

Veterans have several other touchpoints this week: free Veterans Yoga at the Elks Lodge on Monday, the Veterans Food Bank at the Hill Country Veterans Center on Wednesday afternoon, and “On the Play for Veterans,” a full day of tabletop games at the Hill Country Youth Event Center on Saturday, presented by Kerr County Veterans Services and friends.

For families and the young

The Butt-Holdsworth library keeps up its summer pace all week, from Cuentos Story Time and a Finding Nemo scavenger hunt Tuesday to a Friends of the Library book sale, Lego clubs and a “Lessons in Chemistry” Science Mill session midweek. The Ridge Marketplace runs its own kid-friendly slate — Toddler Time on Tuesday, basketweaving with Woodrow on Wednesday, and a “Squeeze the Day” lemonade-stand competition Saturday morning. Two outdoor movie nights bookend the week: Paddington screens Wednesday at The Arcadia Live, and Finding Nemo plays under the stars at Carver Park on Saturday.

Makers, markets and the arts

Saturday is the week’s busiest by far. The morning opens with the Kerrville Walking Group, the Medal Madness races at Louise Hays Park, a guided bird walk and two farmers markets — Hill Country Heritage on Junction Highway and Heart of the Hills on Water Street, both 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The makers are out in force, too: life drawing at the Hill Country Atelier, weaving and knitting classes at The Rogue Skein, and a tray workshop at The Color of Clay.

Classical music lovers have a destination all weekend in Fredericksburg, where the Texas Cellos Music Festival stacks its calendar — from Clive Greensmith on Thursday to “Bach & Bordeaux” at Becker Vineyards and “Voices of Catalonia” on Saturday. Closer to home, novelist Sarah Bird reads at Bending Branch Winery on Friday at 6 p.m., a free evening with boxed meals available from High’s Cafe.

Where the music plays

If the week has a through-line, it’s live music — and there’s far too much to catch it all. Friday alone offers Jerialice at Pint & Plow, the Travis Pierce Band at The Arcadia, and a dozen rooms running karaoke and open mics. Saturday turns the dial up: Forever Simon & Garfunkel at the Cailloux Theater, Austin Meade at The Arcadia with Keaton Adams opening, the Blues Fest in Doyle, and a full slate at the wineries and saloons. Crider’s Rodeo and Dance lights up its dancehall out on the river starting at 8 p.m., with Lane Bricker on the bill.

And for those who’d rather give than gather, the Divide VFD holds its annual steak dinner fundraiser Friday at 5 p.m. — a long-running tradition, and a good reason to make the drive.

It’s a week with something for nearly everyone — a freedom story, an evening of honors, a Father’s Day breakfast, and a whole lot of music in between. The full calendar follows below.
