Nonprofit Week 2025: Together With Hill Country Veterans
The group aims to tackle underlying causes of suicide, such as financial difficulties, relationship breakdowns, catastrophic medical conditions and isolation, rather than just immediate crises.
Leslie North and Jeff Harris represent Together With Hill Country Veterans, an organization dedicated to veteran suicide prevention and awareness.
They employ QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) training to teach intervention techniques. The group aims to tackle underlying causes of suicide, such as financial difficulties, relationship breakdowns, catastrophic medical conditions and isolation, rather than just immediate crises.
The organization is credited with raising awareness about mental health discussions within the veteran community and beyond. In the wake of the flood, they supported other organizations like Gunny’s Warriors and anticipate an increased need for mental health support as the community recovers.
They organize the annual Walk to Remember for 9/11 at Schreiner University, featuring a display of 4,000 flags to represent the 40 annual suicides in the Hill Country, 15 of which are veterans.
The event commemorates those lost on 9/11 and in the Global War on Terror, emphasizing the importance of community support and checking on one another.
