Patricia Stone: June 1, 1930-June 1, 2026
She may not have been born in Texas, but she got here as fast as she could. She admired the “strong, independent, Texas woman” lore and anyone who knows her knows that she adopted it well
Patricia “Pat” Conway Stone passed peacefully into the presence of her Lord and Savior on her 96th birthday, June 1, 2026.
Pat was born on June 1, 1930, in Birmingham, Alabama, the only child of Caudle and Walter Conway. Some time later she and her parents moved to Charlotte, North Carolina. Then, at the age of twelve, they moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where she lived until she went to college. She attended Wesleyan College, later transferring to the University of Alabama where she earned a degree in Fashion Merchandising and was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority.
After graduating from college Pat moved to Houston, Texas. She may not have been born in Texas, but she got here as fast as she could. She admired the “strong, independent, Texas woman” lore and anyone who knows her knows that she adopted it well. She began her career in fashion as a buyer at Sakowitz. In Houston she met and married Jack Stone. They would enjoy 53 years of marriage before Jack passed away in 2007.
Their life together began in Houston but it wasn’t long before they moved to California, Jack’s home, where their first two sons, Jack Jr. and Patrick, were born. The family then returned to Houston where they welcomed two more children, Bill and Jennifer. Pat enjoyed her time raising her four children as she volunteered at their schools, served in the PTA, was a member of the Assistance League of Houston and participated in countless activities that come with raising four children.
Among her many volunteer activities was her work with the Houston ZooMobile program, bringing animals from the Houston Zoo to local schools so children could have a hands on experience with animals. A funny story, family members recall the day a small alligator escaped inside her car and crawled up to the front seat, prompting Pat to pull into a gas station and ask the attendant to rescue her from the escaped passenger.
In 1983, with their children grown, Pat and Jack moved to Hunt, Texas. Having vacationed in the area for many years, they fell in love with the beauty of the Texas Hill Country and it seemed like an obvious choice to make their retirement home. There they created countless memories with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, enjoying walks through the hills, swimming in the Guadalupe River, and gathering as a family.
Pat was a longtime member of Kerrville Bible Church where she formed many treasured friendships and faithfully served her church community, including teaching a children’s Sunday School class for years and serving in hospitality. She enjoyed an active social life traveling and participating in Bible Study Fellowship, Hunt Garden Club, bridge club, rug hooking club, book club, birthday babes, Christians Women’s Job Corp. and mentoring at the Hunt Elementary School. She also had a passion for antiques and floral arranging that ultimately turned into a business for a time in Kerrville.
Above all, Pat was a committed Christian who loved the Lord with all her heart. Her faith guided her life, shaped her character, and blessed all who knew her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, hospitality, and unwavering devotion to her family and her Savior.
Pat will be dearly missed by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and many friends. While our hearts grieve her absence, we rejoice in the assurance that she is now in Heaven, reunited with Jack and resting in the presence of her Lord. As one family member put it, “a nice birthday lunch with family and a late dinner with Jesus.” Amen to that.
Pat’s greatest joy was her family. She is preceded in death by her husband Jack and her granddaughter Alix. She is survived by her son Jack Jr & his wife Kathy and their children Laura & Matthew; her son Patrick & his wife Sonya and their children Walter (Lorna), Sarah (Dusty), Hudson (Rachel), Madison; her son Bill & his wife Janelle and their children Elissa (Josh), Wes, Wen (Sara), Llewellyn (Andy); her daughter Jennifer & her husband Scott and their children Kara & Jack; and twenty-three great grandchildren, with more on the way.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:23.
