Schreiner falls 4-2 at Centenary (La.) in physical season opener

SHREVEPORT, La. — Schreiner University’s men’s soccer team opened its season with a 4-2 loss at Centenary College of Louisiana on Thursday, falling behind by three goals inside the first 21 minutes and finishing the match down a man after a red card in the second half.
Centenary struck three times before the half hour mark. Jose Gomez opened the scoring in the ninth minute off an assist from Jesse Lang, and Harvey Butcher made it 2-0 two minutes later on a feed from Hayden McConnell. Lang added an unassisted goal in the 21st minute to push the lead to 3-0.
Schreiner answered in the 24th minute when Lewis Patterson scored off a Stephano Zagastizabal assist, cutting the deficit to 3-1 at halftime.
Butcher struck again in the 52nd minute, unassisted, to restore Centenary’s three-goal cushion at 4-1. Cody Smith answered for Schreiner in the 57th minute, scoring unassisted to make it 4-2, but the Mountaineers could not find another equalizer.
The match turned physical in the second half. Butcher was cautioned in the 52nd minute, and tempers flared again in the 59th when Schreiner’s Derek Toney and Centenary’s Hudson Rodrigue were both booked on the same stoppage. Centenary’s Angel Montoya picked up a yellow card in the 62nd minute before Schreiner’s Edwin Quijada was sent off with a red card in the 71st minute, forcing the Mountaineers to play the final 19 minutes with 10 men. Diego Saenz was booked for Schreiner in the 87th minute. In all, the teams combined for five yellow cards, one red card and 30 fouls — 17 by Centenary, 13 by Schreiner.
Despite the loss, Schreiner outshot Centenary 16-14 overall and 10-6 on shots on goal. Centenary goalkeeper Andres Osorio made eight saves across a full 90 minutes to preserve the win, a .800 save percentage. Schreiner’s Mason Miller also played all 90 minutes in goal, finishing with two saves on six shots on goal for a .333 save percentage.
Schreiner opens the season 0-1. Centenary improves to 1-0.
