Rivenburgh honored for his Texas wine contributions

The Texas Hill Country Wineries Association has awarded John Rivenburgh the Gilstrap Innovator Award for establishing the first wine incubator program in Texas at Schreiner University.

Rivenburgh, owner of Kerrville Hills Winery, received the recognition during the association’s Annual Wine Symposium in January.

As Coordinator for Vineyard Research and Wine Operations at Schreiner University, Rivenburgh developed Vino de las Colinas, a certificate program providing hands-on training in vineyard management. The program gives students practical experience in Texas Hill Country vineyards, preparing them for careers in the growing Texas wine industry.

Beyond winemaking, Rivenburgh has served multiple roles in advancing Texas viticulture, including two terms as president of the Texas Hill Country Wineries Board. He represents Texas as a delegate to the International Organization of Vine and Wine, has advised the Texas Department of Agriculture Wine Initiative, and worked with state legislators on wine legislation.

The award bears the name of Gary Gilstrap who, with his wife Kathy, founded the Texas Hill Country Wineries Association. It recognizes industry professionals whose leadership, passion and innovation have made lasting contributions to Texas winemaking.
