Schreiner men shine at cross country season opener

GEORGETOWN, Texas — The Schreiner men’s cross country team opened the season with a team title, while the women’s squad placed sixth, at Saturday’s Stormy Seas XC Opener, hosted by Southwestern University.

Running the 5K course, the Schreiner men scored 53 points to edge Southwestern (57) by four points for first place among six scoring teams. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (UMHB) was third with 84, followed by Texas Running Club (86), Concordia University Texas (98) and Nelson University (112).

Nico Lopez led the Mountaineers, finishing third overall in 16:18.70 — the runner-up time among scoring competitors, 21 seconds behind individual scoring champion Jeremiah Calderon of UMHB (15:59.92). Only unattached runner Arlen Hanle of Thunder Road (15:57.76) crossed the line ahead of Calderon.

Adan Valdez (17:00.03), Sean Dansby (17:26.37), Aidan Bedwell (17:42.06) and Derrick Medina (17:44.46) rounded out Schreiner’s scoring five. Christopher Bueno (17:52.55) and Zane Hosey (18:33.51) added non-scoring finishes, and all 14 Schreiner men in the field crossed the finish line. The Mountaineers’ average time of 17:14.33 across their five scorers was the fastest team average in the meet.

In the women’s 5K, Schreiner scored 127 points to finish sixth of seven scoring teams. Southwestern won with 50 points, followed by Texas Running Club (58), Nelson University (63), UMHB (105) and Dallas (119). Concordia University Texas was seventh with 151.

McKenna Emerson paced the Schreiner women, placing 13th overall in 21:19.03. Andrea Eckermann (22:39.06), Amaya Diaz-Gonzales (22:54.77), Piper Hoke (23:53.47) and Daniela Flores (25:32.22) completed the scoring five. Maryanna Aguilar (25:36.32), Katherine Brookby (26:36.74) and Khloe Ginivan (27:43.66) also ran for Schreiner, which had all eight of its women entrants finish.

Saturday’s meet served as the season opener for both Schreiner squads.
