Gary Ernest Wanhainen, Sr., of Kerrville, Texas, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2026, at age 69. His family and friends will miss him deeply and cherish his memory.
Born on November 25, 1956, to Hugo and Jeanette Wanhainen, Gary grew up in Alston, Michigan, before making Texas his home. For the past 43 years, Kerrville was where he lived, worked, and raised his family. It was also the setting for countless everyday moments that those closest to him will continue to treasure.
A cherished chapter of Gary’s life began in 1980, when he married the love of his life, Kathy Osgood Wanhainen in Westland, Michigan. Their life together became the foundation of a growing family as they welcomed their children, grandchildren, and a great-grandchild through the years. At the heart of Gary’s life was his family.
Gary found joy in life’s familiar pleasures: His large collection of Rock n’ Roll, the San Antonio Spurs, NASCAR, playing pool, playing ten thousand and fishing. He also followed three favorite NFL teams—the Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions, and New England Patriots. Watching games and races and spending time with loved ones were simple pleasures that became part of the memories his family and friends will hold dear.
Gary worked for the Kerrville Telephone Company for 19 years before retirement and was a lifelong member of the community. Beyond his work and the places he called home, his most enduring legacy lives on in the family he helped build and the love they continue to share.
Gary’s memory will be lovingly cherished by his beloved wife, Kathy Osgood Wanhainen; his daughters, Jamie (Arturo) and Jeannie; his son, Gary Jr.; his grandchildren, Angel, Faith, Arturius, Corey, Arielle, and Aceson; and his great-grandchild, Nyla. He is also lovingly remembered by his sisters, Dar (John), Joy (Phil), and Cheryl (Pat); as well as many nieces, nephews, and other family members who will hold him close in their hearts.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Hugo and Jeanette Wanhainen; his brothers, Dick and Eugene; his sister, Sandy; and his nephew, Tim. Their memories remain a cherished part of his family’s story.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Jaafar and River City Hospice for the kindness, care, and compassion shown to Gary during his final days. Their gentle care is deeply appreciated and will be remembered with gratitude.
Gary will be deeply missed, but his story lives on in those who loved him, the memories they cherish, and the generations of family who carry his legacy forward.
