Hendrix rallies past Schreiner 49-42 after Mountaineers’ fast start

Jake Blice threw for 448 yards and five touchdowns, Westin Bruce caught three of them, and Hendrix scored touchdowns on six straight possessions to beat Schreiner 49-42 on Saturday night before a homecoming crowd of 2,050 at Antler Stadium.

Schreiner scored on its first five possessions and led Hendrix by 22 points in the second quarter. Then Hendrix took over.

The Mountaineers (3-2) scored 26 points in the first quarter. Isaac Ponce threw touchdown passes of 14 yards to President Calamaco and 40 yards to Derrick Gray, Major Luna hit Gray for 56 yards, and Theodis Fields ran 13 yards for a score. Bryce Warren’s 21-yard field goal capped a 94-yard drive and made it 29-7 with 10:08 left in the half.

Hendrix (3-1) scored on its next six possessions. Bruce caught touchdown passes of 50 and 52 yards. Noah Jackson ran for two scores, the first rushing touchdowns of Hendrix’s season. The Warriors outscored Schreiner 21-0 in the third quarter to take a 42-32 lead.

Luna and Fields connected on a 7-yard touchdown pass with 1:01 left in the third, pulling Schreiner within 42-39. Blice answered with a 5-yard scoring pass to Amare Foreman early in the fourth.

Schreiner stopped Hendrix on fourth-and-1 at the Schreiner 33 with 7:01 left but couldn’t turn the stop into points. Its last drive reached the Hendrix 5, but three straight passes into the end zone fell incomplete, and Warren’s 22-yard field goal with 57 seconds left made it 49-42. Hendrix recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock.

Blice completed 32 of 42 passes. Bruce had five catches for 196 yards, and Jackson ran 29 times for 110 yards. Hendrix outgained Schreiner 581 yards to 541 and held the ball for 36:47.

Calamaco caught 11 passes for 165 yards, both season highs, and Gray had seven catches for 136 yards and two touchdowns. Fields ran for 102 yards on 18 carries, Schreiner’s first 100-yard rushing game of the season. Luna went 16 of 31 for 242 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Ponce went 12 of 17 for 142 yards and two touchdowns. Brady Criswell intercepted Blice in the first quarter.

Schreiner opens American Southwest Conference play at 1 p.m. Saturday at East Texas Baptist.
