Schreiner volleyball rallies from two sets down to win at Cal Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Schreiner volleyball trailed by two sets to open its match at California Lutheran on Friday night, then won three straight to escape with a 20-25, 22-25, 26-24, 25-20, 15-11 victory at Gilbert Arena — the second win of the day for the Mountaineers, who swept Pomona-Pitzer 3-0 earlier Friday.

Schreiner improved to 6-2 on the day’s results. Giana Hilliard was at the center of the comeback, finishing with 17 kills, a match-high 23 digs, three aces and a team-high 20 points across all five sets — including several kills in the closing stretch of the decisive fifth set.

Team numbers

Schreiner hit .191 as a team (68 kills, 30 errors, 199 attempts), ahead of Cal Lutheran’s .160 mark, and won the dig battle 100-86. Cal Lutheran had the clear edge at the net, finishing with 19 total blocks (one solo, 18 assists) to Schreiner’s four — a gap the Mountaineers overcame with hitting efficiency and defense rather than blocking.

Schreiner leaders

Mackenzie Strban matched Hilliard’s kill total with 17 of her own on a .196 clip, finishing with 17.0 points. Jesse Garner added 12 kills, and Lauren Monaco hit .250 with seven kills. Ashlyn Willburn chipped in five kills.

Harlie Gallaspy ran the offense with 32 assists and led the team with four service aces, and Gaby Torres added 22 assists while hitting a perfect 1.000 (2 for 2) in limited swings. Libero Maleyci Soliz added 17 digs, and Azalea De Leon finished with nine.

California Lutheran leaders

Cienna Alvarez led the Regals with 12 kills and a team-high 15.0 points, and Tarin Rueckert was the most efficient hitter on either roster at .353 (8 for 17) to go with a team-high six total blocks. Aby Tibesar and Madeline Magnani each added eight kills, and Kaylee Clayton finished with seven kills and a team-high three aces.

Makenna Kawamura ran the Cal Lutheran offense with 25 assists, with Kimmy Wilson adding 21. Keegan Corley led all players with 27 digs.
