Schreiner volleyball sweeps at Concordia behind efficient hitting

AUSTIN — Schreiner volleyball swept Concordia (Texas) in three sets Tuesday, winning 25-19, 25-14, 27-25 at Deb & Don Christian Fieldhouse in a non-conference match between an American Southwest Conference team and a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent.

Schreiner improved to 4-2; Concordia fell to 3-4. It was the second-tightest set of the season for the Mountaineers, who cruised through the first two sets before needing extra points to finish off the third.

The Mountaineers’ offense carried the night. Schreiner hit .212 as a team — 37 kills against 13 errors on 113 attempts — well ahead of Concordia’s .073 mark, even though the teams were close in most other categories: Concordia actually finished with more digs, 56 to Schreiner’s 55, and assists were within single digits (37 for Schreiner, 30 for Concordia).

Schreiner leaders

Lauren Monaco was Schreiner’s most efficient hitter, going 7 for 14 for a .429 percentage and a team-high 10.5 points. Mackenzie Strban led the team with eight kills on a .333 clip, and Jesse Garner added seven kills on a team-high 23 attempts. Giana Hilliard also finished with seven kills and paced Schreiner defensively with 10 digs.

Harlie Gallaspy ran the offense with 23 assists and served two aces. Emma Frye added three kills in two sets of work.

Concordia leaders

Aubrey Hughes was the most efficient hitter on either roster, hitting .571 (8 for 14) for eight points. B. Fitzgerald led Concordia with 10 kills and a team-high 12 points, and Samantha Taylor added six kills. McKinley Grimm and Aniyah Tompkins combined for 27 of Concordia’s 30 assists, and liberos Jade Romero and Lianna Kearns each finished with 14 digs.
