Schreiner volleyball’s bench shines in sweep of Louisiana Christian
Mikayla Galvan was Schreiner’s most efficient hitter on the night, going 7 for 12 for a .583 percentage and a team-high 8.0 points in two sets of work.
SAN ANTONIO — Schreiner volleyball used Saturday’s non-conference match against Louisiana Christian to get a long look at its depth, and the reserves delivered, sweeping the Lady Wildcats 25-14, 25-19, 25-20 at Mabee Gymnasium.
Schreiner improved to 4-2 with the win; Louisiana Christian fell to 1-11. Schreiner outhit LCU .148 to -.009 as a team, with 34 kills against just 18 errors on 108 swings, while limiting a struggling LCU offense to more errors (25) than kills (24).
Coach Jeremiah Tiffin said earlier in the week he planned to get players who hadn’t seen much time on the floor into a match, and Saturday’s lopsided score gave him the room to do it. Five players who had yet to appear in a match this season — Danica McGarity, Jessa Smith, Mikayla Galvan, Kaydee Howard and Hannah Simpson — all saw the court, with several turning in efficient performances.
Reserves lead the way
Mikayla Galvan was Schreiner’s most efficient hitter on the night, going 7 for 12 for a .583 percentage and a team-high 8.0 points in two sets of work. Kailan Servati added five kills and 6.0 points, and Mandy Ivey continued her strong month with five kills on a .500 clip. McGarity made her season debut a productive one, hitting .400 (2 for 5) in her first extended action of the year — exactly the kind of match Tiffin said he expected her to see.
Among the regulars, Harlie Gallaspy ran the offense with 15 assists to go with four service aces and a team-high 6.0 points in three sets, and Giana Hilliard hit .333 with four kills in a single set of work before giving way to the deeper lineup.
Louisiana Christian
Vivien Brouillette and Kourtlyn Smith each finished with five kills to lead LCU, though both hit below .000 for the match (Brouillette even, Smith at -.100). Kylie Elmore ran the LCU offense with 16 assists, and Yadneli Molina led the Lady Wildcats defensively with eight digs.
