Academy Sports + Outdoors plans to open a new store at Kerrville’s River Hills Mall following a unanimous City Council vote Tuesday night.

Academy Sports, headquartered in Katy, Texas, operates 301 stores across 21 states as of March 2025. The national sporting goods retailer sells hunting, fishing and camping equipment along with sports gear, footwear and apparel.
The company began as a family business in Texas in 1938 and went public in October 2020. Academy trades on NASDAQ under the ticker symbol ASO.
Academy recently announced a partnership with Nike to launch Jordan Brand products in 145 stores beginning in late April 2025. The retailer reported $5.93 billion in trailing twelve-month revenue and plans to open 20-25 new stores this fiscal year.
In its most recent financial report, Academy exceeded analyst expectations with quarterly earnings of $1.89 per share despite a 3.0% decline in comparable sales. The company increased its quarterly dividend by 18% to $0.13 per share.
Academy’s sales have grown substantially over the decades, reaching $6.4 billion in fiscal 2022.
