Kerr County’s cultural calendar is packed wall to wall this week

If anyone still thinks the Hill Country goes quiet once the summer floods and camp buses clear out, this week’s calendar says otherwise.

Between Monday and Sunday, The Lead’s events list counts roughly three dozen live music performances alone — a run that stretches from open mics and karaoke nights to a marquee Saturday concert from “The Voice” winner Jake Hoot at the Cailloux Theater. Add in gallery openings, pottery and painting workshops, a book club, a needle-felting class, a Cajun festival and a soccer doubleheader at Schreiner, and the week reads less like a small-town calendar and more like a cultural district’s.

Art, by the dozens

The county’s arts organizations are running at full tilt. HCAF alone has four workshops on the books this week and next — landscape painting with a palette knife, clay surface decoration, stained glass and wheel throwing — while its “Nature’s Bounty” gourd art show continues through Oct. 9. Down the road, the Museum of Western Art is mid-run on “The Enchanted West of Adrienne Stein” and kicks off a three-day painting workshop with Phil Bob Borman on Sept. 24. KACC has a beginner watercolor class Saturday, and the Heart of the Hills Heritage Center is teaching needle felting to both adults and teens this week on top of its ongoing Hispanic Heritage exhibit. Over in Comfort, MixHaus Gallery is closing out Douglas Galloway’s “Lagniappe” show by month’s end.

Music from vineyards to saloons

The breadth is as much geographic as it is stylistic. Live music this week spans Turtle Creek Vineyard, Singing Water Vineyards and Silver Creek Winery in Center Point on one end, and Gravity Check Saloon, The Arcadia Live and Lazy Days Canteen at Roddy Tree on the other. Friday and Saturday are the heaviest nights, with more than 20 shows between the two — country, karaoke, open jams and a release party for the Maplewood Brothers’ new album, “Ripple,” at River’s Edge Gallery.

Stages, screens and shelves

Schreiner University’s Junkin Center hosts the first Music Student Recital Series of the semester Thursday, the same day the Mountaineers’ soccer teams play East Texas Baptist at home (they host Mary Hardin-Baylor Saturday). At Butt-Holdsworth Memorial Library, the Talking Texas Book Club digs into “The Cedar Choppers” Thursday, and Texas author Cindy Bonner visits Friday to discuss her novel “The Passions of Dellie O’Barr” — part of a week that also includes a writing workshop with Claudia Sullivan on Saturday.

History, food and the outdoors

The Kerr County Historical Commission’s noon meeting Monday turns the mic over to the Turtle Creek Sewing Circle, marking 100 years of continuous gathering, with 21-year member Pennie Prislovky as guest speaker. Saturday brings two farmers markets, the Medina Lake Cajun Festival in Lakehills and a “Rooted Dinner” at The Charmadillo built around regenerative pork and locally grown ingredients. Riverside Nature Center and the Dietert Center keep their usual rotation of naturalist programs, qigong and cornhole running throughout the week.

Taken together, it’s a calendar that touches five Hill Country communities — Kerrville, Comfort, Center Point, Bandera and Lakehills — without anyone having to leave the county to find something worth doing.
