McMurry uses big plays to slip past Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas — Carson Roper and Jess Hoel combined for three touchdown passes and Jerome Malachi returned a kickoff 97 yards for a score as McMurry opened its season with a 36-26 win over Southwestern (Texas) on Saturday.
Roper hit Xavier Williams for a 38-yard touchdown and ran for another score himself, while Hoel found Thomas Chandler for a 28-yard touchdown. Nyles Hullaby added a short rushing touchdown for McMurry (1-0). Dylan Plake, last year’s starter, played sparingly and was intercepted twice on his only seven throws.
Southwestern (0-1) got two touchdown passes from Jaxon Sims — to Graydon Thompson and Reece Cutrer — and a muffed-punt recovery returned for a touchdown by Stephen Fuqua, along with two field goals from Alec Hargis. McMurry turned the ball over four times but still outgained the Pirates 358-224.
