Schreiner shut out 2-0 at LeTourneau, falls to 0-2

LONGVIEW, Texas — Schreiner University’s men’s soccer team was shut out 2-0 at LeTourneau on Saturday, unable to solve a penalty-kick goal five minutes in and getting badly outshot over the final two hours of play.

Karsten Guerra converted a penalty kick in the fifth minute to give LeTourneau an early lead. Less than 30 seconds later, Schreiner’s Cody Brown was shown a yellow card. The Mountaineers held LeTourneau scoreless the rest of the half but trailed 1-0 at the break.

LeTourneau added to its lead in the 67th minute when Colton Chalker scored off a Leandro Ferreira assist, and the Mountaineers could not generate a response. Schreiner was whistled for nine fouls to LeTourneau’s 13, and three LeTourneau players — Kristian Princ (22nd minute), Marcos Gonzalez (32nd minute) and Aidan Arcega (64th minute) — were cautioned over the course of the match. Schreiner’s Cash Reese was sent off with a red card in the 83rd minute, closing out the scoring with the Mountaineers a man down.

LeTourneau dominated the shot chart, outshooting Schreiner 16-4 overall and eight to two on shots on goal, and won the corner-kick battle 7-2. Schreiner goalkeeper Mason Miller made six saves on eight shots on goal, a .750 save percentage, in the loss. LeTourneau’s Carson Gamble needed just two saves to preserve the shutout, going 2 for 2 for a 1.000 save percentage and his first win of the season.

Schreiner opens the season 0-2 after being outscored 6-2 across its first two matches — a 4-2 loss at Centenary (La.) on Sept. 3 and Saturday’s shutout loss. LeTourneau improves to 2-0. In goal, Gamble moves to 1-0-0 and Miller falls to 0-1-0, per the individual records kept in the box score.
