Schreiner’s defense holds on to win at Centenary for first road victory

SHREVEPORT, La. — Schreiner finally won one away from Antler Stadium.

Christian Lora ran for a touchdown, Major Luna threw one to Derrick Gray, and the Mountaineers’ defense made them stand up in a 14-7 win over Centenary (La.) on Saturday night at Atkins Field. The Gents failed on a fourth-and-10 at the Schreiner 40 with 24 seconds left.

The win moves Schreiner to 3-1 and gives the first-year program its first road victory. Its only other road trip was a 47-29 loss at Oklahoma Panhandle State on Sept. 12. Centenary fell to 0-3.

Neither team scored in the first quarter. Schreiner broke through with 3:21 left in the first half, when Lora finished a seven-play, 80-yard drive with a 17-yard touchdown run.

The Mountaineers added to the lead with 7:54 left in the third quarter. Luna found Gray for a 10-yard touchdown pass to cap an eight-play, 43-yard drive, making it 14-0.

Centenary didn’t score until 5:02 remained in the game. Devon Strickland, who came in as the Gents’ leading tackler, threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Theo Dunn to cut the lead to seven. Centenary got the ball back late and drove into Schreiner territory. On fourth down at the Schreiner 40, Strickland’s deep pass to Jay Scott fell incomplete, and Isaac Ponce ran out the clock with a kneel-down.

Theodis Fields led Schreiner with 97 rushing yards on 16 carries, his busiest night of the season. Gray caught seven passes for 105 yards and the touchdown. President Calamaco added four catches for 49 yards, and Mar’kel Ford caught two for 45.

Schreiner again split time between its two quarterbacks. Ponce completed 9 of 16 passes for 134 yards without an interception. Luna went 7 of 16 for 81 yards, threw the touchdown to Gray and was intercepted twice.

Schreiner outgained Centenary 390 yards to 290. It converted 7 of 19 third downs and held the Gents to 3 of 17. Centenary went for it on fourth down seven times and converted twice.

Each team turned the ball over three times. Centenary’s Stephen George threw two interceptions and finished 11 of 23 for 72 yards. Dunn led the Gents with six catches for 69 yards and added 42 rushing yards on four carries.
