Spies, sleuths, rockabilly and a stadium full of Mountaineers: Your Kerr County week, Oct. 12-18

Playhouse 2000’s P2K Youth Theater is staging two comedies back to back in the VK Garage Theater, with performers ages 8 to 18.

The busiest stretch of this week lands Friday and Saturday. Downtown’s theater district stages four productions in two days, Schreiner University hosts a football Saturday, and more than two dozen bands, songwriters and karaoke hosts play bars, wineries and patios across the county. The weekdays are full too, with night-sky talks, a wildlife mixer, book clubs and volunteer cleanups along the river.

Here’s what to know.

Friday night at the Cailloux

Three shows share the Cailloux campus Friday, and a fourth follows Saturday.

Playhouse 2000’s P2K Youth Theater is staging two comedies back to back in the VK Garage Theater, with performers ages 8 to 18. “Get Smart” is adapted from the 1960s TV spy spoof created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry. Bumbling Agent Maxwell Smart and the far more capable Agent 99 try to stop the evil organization KAOS from blowing up the Statue of Liberty. “Too Many Detectives” starts with two security guards who find out the museum they were guarding has been robbed. They call a detective, then another, until the building is overrun with sleuths who each insist on their own method.

The shows are scheduled an hour apart so families can see both:

  • “Too Many Detectives”: 6:30 p.m. Friday; 1:30 and 6:30 p.m. Saturday; 1:30 p.m. Sunday
  • “Get Smart”: 7:30 p.m. Friday; 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday; 2:30 p.m. Sunday

Buyers of both shows get $5 off each adult ticket with the code “seeboth5” and $2 off each child ticket with “seeboth2.” The online system takes one code at a time, so add all tickets for both shows, apply one code, then delete it and apply the other.

Next door at 7:30 p.m. Friday, the touring tribute “One Night in Memphis” recreates the Dec. 4, 1956, session at Sam Phillips’ Sun Records studio. That night Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash fell into an impromptu jam, and Phillips kept the tape rolling. The four became known as the “Million Dollar Quartet,” which later became a Broadway musical. Creator and director John Mueller plays Perkins, and his cast includes former members of the Broadway company. Tickets are $35 to $50.

On Saturday at 3 p.m., Kerrville filmmaker CJ Goodwyn screens “Sherlock Holmes: The Fall of Watson” in the Cailloux Theater. A question-and-answer session with the cast and crew follows. Tickets are $15 and $20, and the film is recommended for ages 13 and older.

Tickets for all four are available at the Cailloux box office, by phone at 830-896-9393, or online at CaillouxPerformingArts.com.

Football Saturday at Schreiner

Schreiner football hosts Howard Payne at 2 p.m. Saturday at Antler Stadium. The Mountaineer Fan Experience tailgate opens at 11:30 a.m. at Trailhead Beer Garden for students, alumni, families and the wider Kerrville community. Tickets are available at schreiner.universitytickets.com.

Schreiner volleyball has two home matches this week, at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Concordia and 6 p.m. Thursday against Howard Payne.
