The Schreiner University softball team had everything going its way on Friday night until the fifth inning of the second game of a doubleheader against visiting Trinity.
Holding a 9-3 lead, the Mountaineers collapsed as the Tigers scored three runs in the fifth, two runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh to force extra innings. In the eight, the Tigers blew the game open with five runs.
This is significant because both programs are mired at the bottom of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference standings. The Mountaineers routed Trinity in the first game 11-5, with a stellar offensive effort, including a two-run home run in the first inning by right fielder Kendall Lippold.
