A furious second-half back-and-forth between Schreiner University and visiting Southwestern resulted in a 2-2 tie on Friday afternoon in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup.
Southwestern took a 1-0 lead at the 55-minute mark in the second half, but the Mountaineers answered 10 minutes on a goal by Owen Harris on an assist by Bhodey Miller.
With the match tied 1-1, Southwestern answered with an unassisted goal by Michael Grimm at the 72-minute mark. However, Schreiner’s Zaaron Gonzalez drew a foul, setting up a penalty kick from about 50 yards out. He connected with forward Cameron Armer, who scored on a header to tie the match.
The two teams tried to rally to break the deadlock but couldn’t find the net in the closing minutes. Southwestern came into the match at 7-1-2, but the tie helped Schreiner stay in the race for the SCAC tournament next month in Houston.
