Schreiner women avenge 32-point loss to shake up conference standings

The Mountaineers get a career night from a former Tivy Standout, shock visiting Texas Lutheran on Friday night.

Things are starting to click for the Schreiner University women’s basketball team, and they proved it on Friday night against visiting Texas Lutheran.

The Mountaineers suffered a 32-point loss to Texas Lutheran on Dec. 1 in Seguin, but Schreiner used its defense to tamp down the Bulldogs for a 65-61 victory at home. The victory solidified Schreiner’s position in fourth place in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference standings, extended the Mountaineers’ three-game winning streak and snapped Texas Lutheran’s six-game winning streak.

Before tonight’s loss, Texas Lutheran’s only defeat came at the hands of Trinity University, tied for the conference lead with Colorado College.

Schreiner turned in one of its most consistent scoring efforts of the night, shooting 48% from the field, and relied on its bench for a key boost down the stretch. First-year player Riley Dill, a Tivy grad, had a career night with 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Mountaineers’ backcourt of Demauria Miles and Brie Sosa turned in another reliable performance. Miles scored a team-high 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Sosa added 12 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. In limited action, Nariyah Buggs scored nine points.

Clinging to a 63-61 lead with 11 seconds left in the game, Madison Parham blocked a shot, but the Bulldogs got the rebound. Dill sealed the game on a defensive rebound and then fouled. She converted both free throws to win the game.

The Mountaineers took advantage of Texas Lutheran’s shooting struggles, including 22 missed 3-point shots. Texas Lutheran shot 34% from the field and had plenty of second-chance shots, but Schreiner also scrapped for defensive rebounds.

The Mountaineers (6-12 overall, 5-4 in the SCAC) host Southwestern at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
