Schreiner women fall short in final seconds at Dallas

The Crusaders (1-5 SCAC) shot 53.2% from the field and withstood a late rally from Schreiner.

IRVING, Texas — Alyssa Sullivan scored 25 points and Aaliyah Jones added 21 points and 17 rebounds as Dallas held off Schreiner 86-83 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball action Saturday afternoon at Maher Athletic Center.

The Crusaders (1-5 SCAC) shot 53.2% from the field and withstood a late rally from Schreiner (3-12, 1-5 SCAC), which trailed by just one point with under a minute remaining before Jones sealed the victory with three free throws in the closing seconds.

Brie Sosa led Schreiner with 20 points, including four 3-pointers, while Tamia Moody added 18 points. The Mountaineers’ bench outscored Dallas’ reserves 38-4.

Dallas built its largest lead at 67-57 early in the fourth quarter before Schreiner mounted a comeback behind Sosa and Moody. The Mountaineers tied the game at 78-78 with 3:15 remaining on a pair of JayDee Zamora free throws.

Sullivan and Jones combined for Dallas’ final eight points to secure the win. Jones blocked a potential game-tying shot by Sosa in the final seconds.

The loss marked Schreiner’s second straight tight conference defeat after falling 37-29 at Brady on Thursday. In that game, the Mountaineers shot just 38.3% but stayed close through strong defense, forcing 17 turnovers.
