Schreiner women snap losing streak at Austin College, 73-66

The Mountaineers shot 60% from the field in the second period, including 75% from three-point range.

SHERMAN, Texas — Schreiner University’s bench provided the spark needed in a 73-66 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball victory over Austin College Wednesday night at Hughey Gym.

The Mountaineers’ reserves outscored Austin’s bench 48-24, led by three players with 13 points each — Skye Thomas, JayDee Zamora and Lynnashia Brooks.

Schreiner (3-11, 1-4 SCAC) overcame an early deficit with a strong second quarter, outscoring the Kangaroos 22-12 to take a 39-31 halftime lead. The Mountaineers shot 60% from the field in the second period, including 75% from three-point range.

Zamora provided perfect shooting off the bench, connecting on all five of her field goal attempts, including 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Brooks added efficiency in the paint, making 6 of 9 shots.

Austin College (7-6, 3-2) was led by Kaylee Smith’s 12 points, matched by Grace Moothart who hit 4 of 6 three-pointers. Avory Miller and Lexi Martin each added 11 points for the Kangaroos.

Despite shooting just 25% in the fourth quarter, Schreiner maintained its lead through strong rebounding, finishing with a 45-43 advantage on the boards.

The victory marked Schreiner’s first conference win of the season.
